Viewing Glass
This device was used to observe the burner flame within the boiler furnace (much like welders goggles or the lenses used to safely observe solar eclipses).
When burning fuels such as Bunker Oil or Diesel Oil the flame is so bright that it can only be safely viewed using this device.
It was used extensively at RGS and to a lesser extent at CBGS.
