Cloverbar Model
This item has been marked as an artifact, which means it is being held in public trust by the Edmonton Power Historical Foundation.
This is a model of CBG1 (Cloverbar Generator 1)
This model shows an outline of Clover Bar Generating Station Unit #1. It was presented as a gift from the Escher Wyss-Oerlikon company, the manufacturer of the turbine and generator, to Edmonton Power, (now EPCOR) during the construction period of these units in 1969 to 1973. The model is built to a scale of 1/4" representing 1 foot.
The model consists of a steam boiler, a turbine-generator, a condenser and most of the auxiliaries associated with a generating unit.
The model is an excellent tool for explaining the process of generating electricity in a thermal power plant to students or other interested groups who have limited knowledge in the production of electrical energy.
The steam boiler converts the chemical energy contained in the fuel, (natural gas or oil) into heat or thermal energy. Water within the boiler is heated and changed into steam at high pressure and high temperature.
The steam is piped into the turbine, where the thermal energy is converted into mechanical energy by the turbine rotor.
The turbine is coupled to the generator where the mechanical energy is again converted to electrical energy, what is commonly referred to as electricity.
The auxiliaries shown in the model are used in aiding the various processes associated with the individual components.
